How do PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra and Premium compare?

Sony raised monthly and quarterly PS Plus prices for new members on May 20, 2026, but the 12-month plans were left unchanged at $79.99 (Essential), $134.99 (Extra), and $159.99 (Premium). Here are the current US prices for each tier and what each one adds.

Tier Price per month (US) Price per year (US) What it includes
Essential $10.99 $79.99 Online multiplayer, monthly games, cloud saves
Extra $16.99 $134.99 Essential perks plus Game Catalog of downloadable PS4/PS5 games
Premium $19.99 $159.99 Extra perks plus PS1–PS3/PSP classics, game trials, cloud streaming

Bottom line: Buy the yearly plan, because Essential costs $79.99 per year versus $131.88 paid monthly, and annual Premium costs only about $25 a year more than annual Extra.

What's the difference between PS5, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro?

Every PS5 model plays the same games. What changes is the size, the storage, the disc drive and, on the Pro, how much graphics power you get. Sony's current US list prices have applied since April 2, 2026, and retailer deals often come in lower.

Console Price (US) Storage Disc drive Best for
PS5 (original, 2020) Discontinued, resale only (launched at US$499) 825GB Integrated on disc model, non-removable Buying used at a discount
PS5 Slim (disc) $649.99 list 1TB Detachable module, included Physical games, 4K Blu-ray movies, trade-ins
PS5 Slim Digital $599.99 list 1TB, or 825GB on some listings None; $79 add-on drive available All-digital players
PS5 Pro $899.99 list 2 TB None; sold separately 4K TV owners chasing advanced ray tracing and higher frame rates

Bottom line: The Slim disc model is the safest all-round pick, and the Pro is only worth the extra $250 if you play on a good 4K TV.

How PlayStation Trophies Work, Term by Term

Every PS4 and PS5 game uses the same trophy vocabulary, and these ten terms cover what each one means.

Bronze
The most common trophy tier, usually given for routine milestones and worth the fewest points toward your trophy level.
Silver
A mid-tier trophy for tougher objectives, worth more points than bronze.
Gold
The highest standard tier, typically reserved for major feats such as finishing the story or beating a hard difficulty.
Platinum
The top award, which unlocks automatically once you earn every other trophy in a game's base list, though not every game includes one.
Trophy level
Your overall rank, calculated from the points your trophies are worth and running from 1 to 999 under the system Sony introduced in 2020.
Missable trophy
A trophy you can lose access to in a playthrough, for example by skipping a one-time event, which forces a replay or an earlier save to get it.
Stackable list
A separate trophy list for another version of the same game, such as PS4 and PS5 editions or different regional releases, which lets you earn the trophies more than once.
Auto-pop
Trophies that unlock instantly when you start a game or load a save, often because progress carries over from another version.
Rarity
The share of players who have earned a trophy, which PS5 shows as tiers ranging from Common to Ultra Rare.
Hidden trophy
A trophy whose name and description stay concealed until you earn it, usually to avoid story spoilers.

Frequently asked questions

  1. How much does a PS5 cost in 2026?

Sony raised prices worldwide in April. Its official US list prices are now PS5 ($649.99), PS5 Digital Edition ($599.99), PS5 Pro ($899.99), and those prices took effect on April 2, 2026. In the UK the prices are £569.99, £519.99 and £789.99.

  2. What is the difference between the PS5 and PS5 Pro?

The Pro has a bigger GPU, with 60 CUs against the standard model's 36. Sony says it renders about 45% faster and has much stronger ray tracing. It is a disc-less PlayStation 5 with a 2TB SSD and Sony's PSSR upscaling, and the disc drive is sold separately. Stock is tight right now. Amazon showed it sold out on October 9, 2026, and some third-party sellers were above $1,000.

  3. How much is PlayStation Plus?

In the US, PS Plus costs $79.99/year ($10.99/month) for Essential, $134.99/year ($16.99/month) for Extra, and $159.99/year ($19.99/month) for Premium. Sony raised the monthly and 3-month prices in May 2026 but left the 12-month plans alone, so paying yearly is the cheapest option by a wide margin.

  4. Do you need PS Plus to play online on PS5?

For most paid games, yes. Every tier includes online multiplayer. Free-to-play games like Fortnite work online without a subscription. Extra adds a catalog of downloadable PS4 and PS5 games, and Premium adds classic PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 games, time-limited game trials, and cloud streaming on supported devices.

  5. How do I check if PSN is down?

Start with Sony's official service status page. It shows live updates for Account management, Gaming and social, PlayStation Store, PlayStation Video and PlayStation Direct. On your console, go to Settings, then Network, and run the connection test. That tells you whether the problem is Sony's servers or your own connection.

  6. Is GTA 6 enhanced for PS5 Pro?

Yes. Sony's official store page lists Grand Theft Auto VI is released for PlayStation®5 and PS5® Pro on November 19, 2026 and marks it as PS5 Pro Enhanced. Digital pre-loading begins on 12 November 2026. GTA 6 won't come out on PS4.
